Damn the torpedoes, I’m coming, I’m going to Sun ’n Fun!
When I decided to sell my bird, I thought I was done.
But now, spring is coming, the sky is calling me and I feel like flying.
So I decided to fly down to Sun ’n Fun.
Yes, Whiskyblue is still for sale, but I’m going to enjoy it, I’m going to fly it until it flies away.
So follow along with me.
I’m going to be talking about flying, about my trips, about how hard emotionally it has been for me, I’m going to be talking about planning, logistics, camping, about my Super170 and why I did what I did when we upgraded her.
Follow along on my youtube channel ( https://www.youtube.com/@wolfherold7760), like, subscribe, and I’m going to try to post every two or three days. See you there.

The weather came up with a surprise!
It reminded me how important a thorough wx-briefing is.

Thanks for your video Wolf. Your concerns as a VFR and tailwheel pilot are familiar. Your idea to have alternative routes and fuel stops makes good sense. You have a single destination but if you give yourself time, it should come together. That’s how I would do it.

I have never used Windy.com but others may comment. I find that ForeFlight has good basic weather for local flying and use that frequently. I teach my students to use this weather site for actual cross country flight planning:

https://aviationweather.gov/

One of my flight instructor colleagues teaches weather at a local community college. He urges students to take his in depth course or seek education on all aspects of weather. On line, University, pilots can never have too much knowledge on weather.

Looking forward to hearing more about your upcoming flight and hope it is safe and fun.

Windy.com is a really interesting website with multiple-layers of info. On short-range flight planning I use AirNav.com and check AWOS at nearby and enroute fields…. BUT… don’t forget to check NOTAMS https://www.notams.faa.gov/dinsQueryWeb/

ForeFlight and Fly-Q are favorite pre-flight briefing sources also.

As a CFI and TCE I’ve instructed now for over 50 years… but almost learned the hard way to “Practice what you Preach” …one morning on the way to a Saturday Texas Fly-IN hosted by Frank and Paul up at FTW-Spinks…. Having failed to properly pre-flight the WX/Notams that Early Sat Morn Departure… Cruise-Climbing in the early morning calm… my com radio automatically tuned to 121.5 …(not by choice, but that’s what it does when it first wakes-up)… I overheard ATC attempting to reach some Fool about to enter a TRA and about to be “intercepted” if the Fool didn’t Wake Up!

It finally DAWNED on me I was on the heading and altitude and general area of where That Fool was…. and avoided further complications with an immediate diversion.

Some day I’ll write the story about how I DID check NOTAMS before flight…. and it resulted in the U.S. Air Force offering my employer the use of a C-9 Nightingale and paying for extensive damage to my company’s airplane.

Do the Dance or Pay the Piper.

Camping on the way to Sun 'n Fun ?

https://youtu.be/EisUcJ6V21w

I decided to fly down to Sun ‘n Fun, and one of the reasons is that I want to show my plane because it is for sale.

I’ll be departing from the Boston area, which makes this a 10 – 12 hour flight depending on the wind. I suppose one could do it one day, but at 73 years old I’m not going to push it, I’d rather take it easy and have fun.

So I’d like to find a nice grass strip to camp, because my old body doesn’t want to lie down for the night on hard tarmac.

Any suggestions for a place are very welcome. Send me an email (whiskyblue@wolfsview.com), shoot me a message or leave a comment below.

Even better, perhaps someone else from the Northeast is flying down to Florida and we could meet at that strip and camp together spending the last night before the show chatting about our trip there.

How about that.

See you at the show!

Unexpected emotions...

https://youtu.be/FuCVQu43BNs

In less than 4 weeks I’ll be flying from New England down to Sun ’n Fun and when I looked at the map and envisioned my flight, a sudden whiff of anxiety blew through my heart:” Gee, you haven’t flown in almost 6 months, and now you want to go on a 1200 mile cross country trip? How is that supposed to work?”
“No problem”, says the internet, “ it’s easy and all is cool”.
Well, everything is easy and cool on the internet, but I’m talking about reality. And for some of us who don’t fly a lot, it is worrisome.

But I’m not going to let it stop me from taking this trip. I flew about 120hrs in less than two months last fall, and that’s probably more than many of the 170 owners fly in an entire year.

So where does this anxiety come from, what do I make of it or with it?
Maybe it has something to do with my advanced age? LOL
Because back in my soaring days, there were many years with a 6 months hiatus where I didn’t fly due to winter and/or prolonged periods of bad weather in late fall or early spring. Not once was I the least preoccupied before my first flight of the season. On the contrary, I could hardly wait to get airborne and chase thermals again.
Nor did I have the slightest trepidation when I hopped in my car after a long year of pandemic isolation.

So I decided to take that shot of anxiety as a nudge to go out and fly an hour or two with my instructor friend and then continue with some solo practice on nearby grass strips and get confident again.

That sounds like a lot of fun, actually, I’m really looking forward to it.

In the end it's all about managing emotions, and that has always struck me as an interesting challenge in my flying endeavors.

I teach my students that anxiety, in some cases fear, are healthy emotions because they can alert us to danger which, in turn helps keep us safe. We have to manage them. Your journal is actually an excellent example of effective risk management and is appreciated.

As a former glider instructor and tow pilot, I noticed another of your comments. In the glider community, it is very common for even the most experienced pilots to go up with an instructor. I recall master soaring competitors asking for a local checkout even from a relatively inexperienced local such as myself. Not so much in the powered aircraft world. For some reason, some of us are adverse or maybe too proud to ask for help. Your decision to fly with an instructor as part of your approach to making a trip to Sun n Fun is notable and also appreciated.

Thanks for this interesting thread!
