Hi everyone,
I recently acquired a 55’ 170B here down in Chile, and I’m exploring the possibility of upgrading the original O-300 to an O-360 A1P. I’m curious if anyone here has experience flying or maintaining a 170 with this engine.
Are there any STC available for this conversion that I should look into? Additionally, I’d appreciate any insights with the O-360 A1P.
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge and advice!

There's a lot of experience here with Lycoming O-360s in general. I love my -A1A and MT propeller.
I'm far from an authority on this, but I've never heard of an STC for an A1P in a Cessna 170.

You might inquire with Dave Stoots in Alaska. I don’t think his STC’s cover the A1P with its forward mounted governor but he would be the expert I think.

On the
FAA’S website it says that Stoots STC SA02106AK is for, “the installation of Lycoming O-360 series engine". I thought that maybe this generic language might allow for the installation of your O-360-A1P so I asked Dave Stoots. He said that STC is “not supported for parts at this time” and that it was only for the A1A and A1D variants. He went on to say that while they offer STC SA02282AK for the IO-360-M1A , M1B, “The most demand is for the IO-370CLC1U8 195hp Prime for the Cessna 170 series models.” As far as I know, Del-Air and
Stoots are the only ones currently offering/supporting Lycoming conversions for the C-170. I’ve heard nothing but good reports on Stoots’ support. With the terrain in Chile the 195hp Continental Prime engine or
The Landing Gear Works’ 210 hp Continental IO-360 would be the ideal conversions IMHO. As discussed
here, the latter STC is not nearly as well supported as Stoots.
As you are asking about an STC for your C-170, I assume it is still U.S. registered as Chile is not listed on the
FAA’s Bilateral Agreements List.
