Wing Tip identification

I need to identify the wing tips that are installed on a 170B. I think they are 172 wing tips, but can not proove it. The wing tips have a slight droop. Anyone have a suggestion?

Maybe post a picture where we can gawk at it/them, or pull one
and see if the part number sticker is still inside.

Late '70's and some Hoerner wingtips have a slight droop. The original 170 wingtip was all-metal, no droop, with a seam on the outboard edge.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your suggestions. I am basically computer illiterate, so a picture is out of the question. The aircraft is out of my possession for about a week, so much for removing the wing tip. I do not think it is a Hoerner, not enough droop. I like the suggestion of being a late 70 model 172 tip, this gives me a lead. I will check internally when the AC returns and might get lucky. The problem: No log entry or 337.

I have a set of wing tips that I removed from my airplane and put on the original type. They are Madras Air Service "Super Tips". SA 2454WE. They are FAA Approved for the 170 A and B models. They do not have a large droop and are made of plastic, if I remember right. I still have them.

I can post a picture later.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for your help. The tips are apparently from the 1966 to 1975 era 172 wings. The identification tag is no longer in the tips but the imprint is still there. From the pictures I have seen, they appear to have come from a 1966 to 175 era 172. I am going to write up a 337 and see if the feds will buy the installation.

Has anyone (the FUZZ) ever questioned you about your wing tips?
Please bear in mind that the easiest answer, by far, is for them to say "NO". Then you have wing tips that you've been told "NO"on and you're in violation. Why not just be happy the way things are
and not rock the boat. Youre going to play hell finding a set of original tips anyway. I always feel that asking is a really bad policy unless it's a really serious problem.

New, original wingtips are not that difficult to find. They are exactly the same part as L-19s which are abundant in the surplus market priced between $100-$200 each.

Just don't ask Cessna for the price - it's 10x the surplus market price.

There has been a set of original tips for sale on one of the big auctionsites that we can't mention here. 8)

They may still be there.

Gentlemen:

I submitted a 337 on the installation of "late model 172 wing tips" and I now have a field approved 337 in my possession. I do not understand the reluctance on some to seek a field approval. I have been at this for over 50 years and have only had one field approval refused.

In that case, I sought preapproval for the project and was given the go ahead. I wanted to install an "automotive battery" in a PA-25 sprayer. It took some time to make the modification, but in this lapse time, the FAA got on the "bogus parts" binge. Boy, when I called for a field approval, they did a double reverse flip and said No, No, No, No! Well, it was a good idea.
