TexOkla (Smokin'-Joe's) Fly-In, Saturday, Nov 15, 2025

Post by Karl Towle »

This will be our 3rd joint Texas/Oklahoma fly-in to a unique destination. Smokin' Joe's Rib Ranch, 3165 Jollyville Rd, Davis, OK 73030, (580) 369-2818, is just a short distance east of I35, and south of Davis, Oklahoma. They serve fantastic Barbecue, have an RV park out back, and behind that is an uncharted grass airstrip. A document depicting the airstrip is available here: https://app.box.com/s/46hkjbbro2pfosbnjaqw1sfykuzgxuc5.

Let's plan on being parked by 11:00 am so we can walk in together. We welcome our Texas and Oklahoma members, their guests, along with any from other states who wish to join us.

Let's pray for good weather! Also, please check this Forum topic for a runway condition update, which will be posted Friday, 14 Nov, by 1000. Should we have any runway condition issues, we'll let you know here, along with an alternate plan.

If you have questions, please contact Karl Towle at (817) 992-5281; karljiml@gmail.com, or Jim Yates at (405) 812-8982 or jyates2@cox.net.

Smokin' Joe's fly-in is ON for tomorrow. Runway condition verified good. Weather mostly sunny, high of 85 Deg, winds SSW at 14 mph which will work out to about 12 kts of direct X-wind.

Please come and join us for a great lunch!

Saturday the 15th dawned bright and clear; forecast for strong winds SSW across the runway. The reality was quite a bit better. Pattern altitude winds were indeed strong and bumpy, but on the surface had diminished to between calm and about 8 kts, from the SE, directly down the runway!

Three C170s gathered along with 2 surface vehicles to deliver 7 of us to Smokin' Joe's for some great barbecue. We had a delicious lunch, with great, friendly service. Everyone leaves Smokin' Joe's satiated and looking forward to their next visit.

I need to add here that they are actively seeking more aviating visitors to their facility. They are in the process of remodeling a building next to the parking area to contain bathrooms and a shower, adding adjacent patio and picnic tables. Safety Tip: Please remember this is a short strip with obstacles, that demands attention to energy management. There is absolutely no shame in going around if not down in the first 600 ft of the runway!

Attending were (clockwise) David Bengtson, Jimmy Davis, Jake Hampton, Jim DeHaven, Karl & Nancy Towle & Virginia Hummer.
Jimmy Davis & Jake Hampton joined us from Fayetteville, Arkansass, and the rest from Texas. Gentle jibe; what happened to our Oklahoma members?
