I have been wanting to clean up the Yoke's and the columns. When discussing with my IA he informs me that the typical chrome re-finish on the columns is not allowable. Something about a flat chrome that was PMA??? Anybody knowledgeable?

I also have found out that the powder coating of the yoke is NOT allowable either because it may hide cracks.

Chroming is allowed for the control columns. The only "catch" is that they need to be baked for 3 hours @ 350 deg. F. to remove any hydrogen embrittlement. Just had mine done... Look great and with the new control bushings, they're as smooth as butter.

Correct, Doug! Any certified aviation plater can chrome plate and treat for hydrgen embrittlement. (Besides baking for 3-4 hours at 350F, another method is to submerge in a 177 degree-Centigrade oil bath for 2 hours.)

Doug, who did your re-chroming and what was the cost. Also, I would assume the yoke handles are removed. Correct?

Yes we had to remove the yokes, but I was going to remove them anyway to have them painted so it wasn't an issue. The chroming was done by a (relatively) local shop in CT. I think it was $65, but I'd have to double check.
