I can't find it now, but didn't someone just recently post something about wanting to use rivets in leiu of the original fabric clips when recovering the wings of their 48 model? I don't recall the "why", but if it due to lack of availability I see that Spruce lists "Cessna-type fabric clips, individual spring steel clips used to attach fabric to metal ribs.Eliminates rib stitching. 5% discount on purchase of 100. p/n 09-19900..$0.55 "
I don't know how many would be required, probably a couple hundred & at 55 cents per they'd add up quick. But ya wouldn't have to worry about an STC/field approval for rivets instead of clips, plus no hole drilling.

Eric As far as I know the clips have always bin available. The problem I had was that the original holes were elongated. Theis was a problem early on because Cessna had a sevice letter about the problem in the 1940's. I redrilled for clips on the top of the wing and figured if the original holes lasted 52 years this set of holes will last as long as I will fly. There is a guy on the 140 site that has an stc to replace the clips with rivets on 140-120' but I am not sure if it covers 170s but it is probably a better set up if the FAA would approve. Although I doubt they have many inspectors who could tell. Bill K

This is the info on Dip Davis' STC. Doesn't look like it's good for 170's. Maybe he'd add on to it.

STC Number:

SA01814CH

This certificate issued to:

Davis W D

STC Holder's Address:

Description of the Type Design Change:

Replace Cessna S-43 fabric attachment clips with AD42ABSLF rivets

STC Holder Comments:

I'm offering a kit containing enough rivets and self adhesive reinforcing tape to do both wings for $150, which is far less than the price of enough clips to do the job and is easier and neater than the original method.
