tailwheel arms

I'm into my tailwheel for the annual. The arm assembly might need replacing next time around. What was the consensus of going to the type with turned up arms? I couldn't find that thread in my search.

Depends on the cost difference. Helped my steering a little (1952B). Don't think I would buy one if the other was good though. I was given the turned up one by a friend so it cost me nothing to try.

I installed the turned up version (p/n 3214T) a few years ago. It wasn't the big cure-all for lazy t/w steering it is often cracked up to be. But the arms seem beefier than the standard part (p/n 3214), so I'm glad it's on there. The old (standard) part was worn at the spring notches, so it needed replacing anyway. The geometry with the 3214T
is just a bit better for the early (thru 54) steering arrangement. Don't know the comparative prices for the two parts. If you're buying one anyway I'd go with the 3214T.

Hey Dave, I replaced the arm assembly on my TW to the 3214T after the inner hub separated from the outer on the old arm assembly. The 3214T is about 50% more in cost but like Eric said, if you NEED to replace the old one, consider doing it for durability(The arms won't bend near as easily as the 3214) and a slight improvement in steering geometry. You'll also need to replace the upper/lower dust caps because of the wider arm, or you can cut the openings wider on the existing dust caps if you wish.

I find my hd steering arm bends almost as easy as the standard duty, geometry's a bit better though.

Ok the truth is I was considering buying a great looking used one that's on an auction site that I cannot mention here. As it turns out having put way more time into repairing my old one than it is worth I'm good for a while.

I just looked at my newest Univair price list, the 3214T lists for $157 versus $112 for the 3214. Whew! that stuff's sure gone up!

I'm thinking of pulling out of my stocks and making a quantity buy on Scott tailwheels and parts. The '02-'03 Spruce catalog has the 3200 at $549, the current website price is $896. Like oil. I've fixed mine up now as good as it can be but the castings and arms do wear so all I have done is put off the inevitable a few years. By then the new tailwheel might be reason for the second mortgage.

It might pay to shop around. I don't know if they have any Scott t/w's or Scott parts, but Preferred Air Parts has some real good prices on Cleveland W&B stuff.

If you think that's bad, the Scott 2000 (the 3200's baby brother) is now going for $1507.00 at Spruce!!!!

$1507 for a 2000? WOW 8O Guess I'll have to get a crate full of those too :lol:
