The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I am about to start re-wiring my 170A. I was wondering from those of you that have done this already, how did you lable your wires. I have seen wire stamping machines, but those are high dollar. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you don't need the wire labelled all along the length,... you can label eac end with I.D. wrappers available at electronics stores. These are short, numbered "tapes" which are wrapped around the wire at each end. Pretty inexpensive, or ...you can easily make your own system. Indelible marker and use a system similar to resistors....a series of colored bands.

Black equals numeral "one", Blue equals numeral "two", etc etc. Black-Black--Blue-Black equals the number 1121.

Good idea George! That's an approach I've never thought of. Any combination of numbers/colors would work, but the "official" resistor color code is as follows:

0=Black
1=Brown
2=Red
3=Orange
4=Yellow
5=Green
6=Blue
7=Violet
8=Gray
9=White

In college (at the original UT!) we learned a little saying as a memory aid, but it can't be repeated here...

For trouble shooting later on, it might be a good idea to code the wires with the same numbers as they appear in the IPC. Just a thought.

Miles's ditty is interesting. Allen also sent me a similar one, along with an interesting theory about it's origination. (Allen- "I think this probably came from GI training in WW II for radio repairmen. I learned it from a Navy Chief when studying for my ham license as a youngster!")

A slightly altered version is:

Lets see now, are bad Boys Blue? Or Black? Or are their behinds Brown? (I can't recall which B is which color.)

Use an indelible razor point pen (Sharpie) and use white heat shrink. Then cover with a piece of clear heat shrink. Lasts forever. Used it in my "Flight Test" days with Douglas Aircraft for 20 years. Be careful pulling it thru holes or ty-wrap ties, if heat shrink is a little loose it'll pull off.
