Does anybody have a copy of STC SA672SW which allows the use of cessna 305 (L-19 Bird Dog ) wings on 170's. The gentleman who owns the STC is deceased. I believe he sold the rights to the STC but the FAA doesn't have that info on file who he may have sold the rights to. If anyone has info on this matter please drop me a line at

I wonder what kind of flaps are used in that STC...

I'm curious as to why anyone would want to install L-19 wings on a C-170. I can only imagine that they could only be compaticable with a "B" model without very extensive airframe modification.

BL, I would doubt the STC covered the 170 or even the 170A because as you and I know it is not a bolt on. Not even close on the 170 and a whole lot of work though more possible on the 170A. I think more likely the STC indexing information is just not complete or simply incorrect. In other words someone labeled it wrong.
On the other hand I would also not be surprised to find the STC does cover the 170 and 170A. The reason I would not be surprised is I've heard stories of STCs, or modifications to them, received in the distant past, with little more than asking. For example I wouldn't be surprised if the STC owner filed his paperwork for a 170B STC and a fed suggest he just include all the 170s. Sure why not. What does the STC holder care how hard it would be to actually do it.

The main point in my curiousity is "Why" would anyone use L-19 wings instead of a set of C-172 wings which would be much more available and virtually the same as those on the C-170.

Bruce, didn't your previous A/B model actually have L-19 wings modified with B-flaps?
bluEldr... some of the L-19 parts and assy's were sold mil-surplus at very cheap prices. I know you might not believe this but some of the 170 owners have been known to be
very cheap ....and have even gone to great lengths to modify their airplanes in ways that the average plane owner would never imagine!

Yes my A model had L-19 wings with B model flaps. It is not a simple matter of bolting on the wings. The entire flap activating system including the cable pulleys and runs have to be replaced/installed in the airframe.
George hit it on the head. At one time surplus L-19 parts weren't worth what they are today.

The curiosity of the STC for me would be what flaps did it allow. B model or L-19. Big difference.

Yes, the B-model has slotted semi-fowler flaps which deploy to 40 degrees while the L-19 had plain slotted* flaps which deploy to 60 degrees. (Gotta get those rockets on target!)
