I just caught part of an episode of "Wings at Work" on the Discovery Wings Channel and lo' and behold - the was a C170B! The episode is called "Classroom in the Sky" and talks about flight instruction of various types - mountain flying, seplane, etc. The C170B (N1881C) is featured in the mountain flying segment and appears to be a '53 or '54 given the cowl, rounded rear windows, and tailwheel steering arrangement. Soooo, check your schedules and pop a tape in the vcr if you are interested...

A friend of mine,Andy Troia, is a former owner of N1881C. He bought it back around 1998 from longtime Association member Bob Schroers (of glareshield fame) who owned it for years. Alas,Andy ended up selling it just a couple years later after he moved to Colorado and started working as a CFI. I hope whoever owns it now is having fun with it......
We called it "the dinner mint" around the airport because it was painted pistachio ice-cream green with chocolate brown trim.

Hey, I'll bet the pilot they showed was your friend! His name was Andrew and was working on his Inst. and Comm. tickets at Strand Flying School, Walker field, Grand Junction, CO. Could that be him?

Yeah, that's him--dark hair, beard, glasses. He ended up working as a CFI for Strand there in Grand Junction. I've lost touch with him,at least for the time being, but the last I heard he had gone back to making a living as a merchant sailor and had bought himself an 85-horse Luscombe. I don't have cable or dish TV,but maybe I can get one of my friends who do to tape the show for me. Do Andy & his 170 get much screen time?

Yup, that's the guy!

He and the 170 have about 5 minutes in the show. I've got it on tape (since it came on at 3 am) and you can have it if you'd like. If you can't find someone to tape it, just send me your address and I'll shoot it out to you. It probably means more to you than me anyway.

Yup, it sure was nice to see a 170 get some time on a major channel like Discovery-Wings. She sure looked good against that mountain backdrop.

Enjoy!
