I need to replace Channel- Tailwheel spring retainer Part #? 0510000-31 due to hairline crack. Any suggestions for vendor? Plan to also replace main leaf. Have looked at postings on that subject. I believe mine is currently a thicker spring. Guess I'd better measure. Any problems with the installation process of thicker springs(L-19)? Source for L-19 spring?
Thanks,
Rick

Rick, I don't recommend the thicker spring...I'd recommend the original 170 spring. Check your PM Inbox for a msg from me.

Rick I go along with George, go along with the original spring configuration, also if you use Univair or Spruce, get it from Univair the last spring assy I got from spruce had a Univair part number! It cost 15.00 dollars more but I thought I could save more than that on shipping since I was ordering other items. the only reason I ordered it from spruce.

Where can you purchase the shim that goes between the main leaf and the tailwheel assembly?

What shim? Do you know an illustration or Part number? Do you mean the spacer to convert to narrow leafspring?

(Pretty sure I have one at half-price.)

I Powder coated all my (4) leafs and had problems (due to the extra thickness) putting on the the top cap (the bracket that has 8 AN3 bolts going into it from the side......Eventually got them in some how.....but that was a few years ago and don't remember how.??

Joe, I think I have one with a "brother-in-law" price on it for you in the hangar...but let me get home and look for it to be sure. If I don't forget to look... I'll be pretty crowded for time between my return home and leaving out of town for work!

Rattle my cage in a couple of days....

I just bought a new channel PN 0510000-31 from Cessna for $140.00. What I don't understand is why the tail piece on the channel sits above the spring so far forcing you to put stress on it to tighten the u-bolt clamp. My A & P replaced my broken u-bolt and tightened it enough that I got a small crack started where the little flat tail piece meets the u shaped-stronger portion of the channel. Since the channel comes undrilled, I am tempted to drill it so it is close to touching the top leaf of the spring. Does anyone share my problem?

My channel was found to be cracked also when I disassembled the entire assembly after purchasing my plane as a basket case. Instead of replacing it I "broke" it. I fabricated a strap of .032" 2024-T3 the same size as the channel and double-flush riveted the "broken off" piece to it. It lays under the channel and is trapped by same. The spring clamp sets on top of the split line and allows the taipiece to flex. It has survived over 300 landings (a few were true arrivals) since I installed it with no evidence of failure at this point.
