Thumbing through the official Oshkosh/Airventure pics from this year and I noticed a couple of familiar faces in the photo album. I guess you can't go anywhere without someone noticing you these days.
I'm horrible with remembering names, but I recognize both of these guys from the Petit Jean Fly-In that I invited myself to earlier this year.

All I can remember is that they are from the group of Minnesota guys that flew down. Any names for the faces? Kyle, got any ideas?

Hey Party Crasher! You probably remember those two as John Renwick and Dennis Hoffman. They were at Petit Jean. They were one of the 4 a/c from MN (as I recall there was only 1 a/c there from IA

)
These two are part of the witness protection plan, so I'm not sure of their actual names.
Frankly I'm surprised they allowed themselves to be photographed. But I guess when you've got a DEA agent running the boat taking you back to the mainland after trying to escape the country, it makes headline news!
John and Dennis, any comments? Just what were you caught with and where were you going?

We were caught with Cubs on floats, having more fun than the legal limit in Wisconsin! Even the arrest couldn't wipe the grins off our faces!
(By the way, that's me on the left, Dennis on the right.)
That photo was at the Oshkosh seaplane base, of course. Dennis and I flew our J3s down there on Sunday, home again on Tuesday. Dennis began flying his J3 on floats last summer; I first flew mine three weeks ago.
The boat trip was to go out to the planes on Monday to see if the floats needed pumping out yet. (We both keep the Cubs hangared at KRNH, and this was the first time they'd been moored on water for an extended period.) We didn't find much water, which helped with the grins.
I bought the floats *** a year ago, and this is just about the best thing I've ever done to my J3!
Best Regards,
John

Hi John,
I don't have a closeup at the moment, but I'll try to remember to take a photo next time I'm at RNH. I bought the dollies with the floats; they were custom-made for them. Each dolly is shaped like the bottoms of the floats (more or less) with wooden boards fastened to a steel framework. Each has two aircraft axles with Cleveland wheels and 600x6.00 tires at the back, and an aircraft tailwheel assembly at the front, fully-swiveling. The previous owner used them for takeoffs on hard surface runways in the Spring. I had a steel framework made to tie them together, and a yoke at the front with a trailer hitch, so I can drag the Cub around on them, launch and recover at the boat slip. It worked very well!
By the way, my 170 also made it to Oshkosh, but a friend of mine from England was flying it. He spent the week looking for parts and tools for a Supermarine Spitfire Mk26 kit he's just starting on. I can't wait to see that one go together!
