generator and ammeter question

Not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, I will appeal to all the other wizards out there for some help on troubleshooting my genartor woes.
While flying the other day, the ammeter suddenly went to almost a +15 AMP indication. Operating were the strobe, one COM radio and transponder. Shutting the stobes off made no difference, and when I was clear of airspace requirements, I turned off everything else, yielding no difference. This continued until we landed at out destination about 15 minutes away.
Any help appreciated.
