Flap repair

Ernesto got one of my flaps after it blew the gust locks off. The right flap is off now for repair at the inboard hinge but I was looking at the spring tab (p/n 0520120-2, item #11-5 figure 11 of the 170A parts manual) mid-span on the flap spar and noticed the hole was more of a slot, is it suppose to be like that or just a single hole? The parts manual doesn't show that great of detail and while the flap is off, if it needs replaced, might as well do it.
Thanks!

Jud

I believe you have a 170A with the 140 style flaps. The spring attach point started off as a hole. You can do a weld repair to get it back to the way it started out. It would be a good idea to check both ends as well as the spring itself for wear. Brian

That part of the airplane is most likely fabricated of 24ST alloy which is not classed as a weldable alloy.

Flap tube and the welded on spring tab (arm) are 1025 steel on a 140. Dug up the 170 pre 59 parts catalog and figure 11 in it is the fin assembly. Figure 5 shows the left aileron and flap. Figure 41 shows the flap control system and it looks like it leaves out a couple bits and doesn't list a spring. Figure 2 shows the flap bellcrank and pushrod assembly but doesn't show a flap return spring.

Opps, Sometimes its better be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I'm a 140 guy and don't have a 170 nearby to look at, so I have to ask, is there a spring on that spring tab? Where's the other end attach?
Is there a separate IPC for the 170A?

yep there's a spring attached...and it goes through the rear spar and attaches to another tab inside the wing. That flap was put back on today and flight tested (ok, so I just wanted to see how the new 8.00x6 tires rolled) and everything works. I didn't replace the flap tab, but I'll keep an eye on it, it's worn more on the right flap then the left. I suppose that little piece is $50 for a NOS piece.
