i bought 300 quarts of
aeroshell 100/50 oil
for about 48 cents/quart!!!!
it is now about 30 years later
and i'm down to 4 quarts left!
i have been told that
oil is good forever,
is this true

I've seen some old oil with what seemed to be residue of some sort at the bottom. I was thinking it was separation of some of the chemicals involved with the oil blend.

I'm certainly am not an expert but if I didn't see any of this I'd use it. The fact that you have been all along and presumably haven't had any problems would back that up.

After 300 quarts and 30 years whs stop at the last 4 quarts?

The last few cases of 50wt I bought, as well as a drum of 60wt for the radial all had expiration dates. Both Aeroshell.

Probably just something else to keep the lawyers happy...

You probably have to ask around your local airport, and find out where people there are buying oil. Where I live, the bargains are at places off the airport, that you wouldn't find other than by word of mouth.

what is the current thinking,
what is are the various weights
that all you 170 owners are
using for the various seasons.

Check your local Sam's Club for aero oil. I bought all they had of Aero Shell 15/50 at $26.00/case. I only use single vis Shell 100 (unless I can get Pep Boys) so I traded it off for two or three extra quarts/case.

Yeah, be careful of old oil. Some of it's over 10 million years old before they bring it up out of the ground!
Sediment in the bottom of old stock isn't a problem as long as it's not a deteriorating old steel/cardboard container. Let the sediment remain in the container. (filter it) Use the oil up.
I've got some very old aero Mobil red-top (non-detergent/dispersant) I use in the tractor only because I use AeroShell in the 170. If it was AeroShell AD I'd use it in the plane. The local oil distributor has several 55 gallon drums of this stuff he'd like me to make an offer on, but when I told him I only use AD oil, he gave me a bunch of the stuff.
Don't overlook your local oil distributors for low pricing on aero oil in your favorite flavor. My Mobil dealer sells me AeroShell 100W for $30/case, but I have to ask him to order it and it usually takes a couple of weeks.

I've looked in every Sam's I've been in in the last 2 years and never found any Aviation oil. That includes Sam's in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin when I spent weekends there. Even tried them on line. Got it at SkyGeek when they had their free shipping.
