Can anyone tell me where I can get the fuel tank strap bolts for a 1954 Cessna 170B. They are a kinda wierd bolt and Spruce does not have them.

Well I just went throught the same whole thing , I ordered the part number out of the parts book and from 2 diierant suppliers I got 2 differant bolts and both were not correct , so in the end, I used a bolt that was an AN ( I forget the size now ) that would go through the metal spacer in the ends of the strap , and then I put a fiber lock nut on the end of the AN bolt. That said you probably see how difficult it is to work in that space.I used a box end wrench with some tape on one side to hold the nut in place until I could get the thread started.

Go slow and be patient , and don't tighten the one up until you get the other one started.

Is there anyway you could tell me the AN size of that bolt? I pulled a hex bolt out of the airplane that was really to short (I end up cutting it out) because the threads were to short and it bottomed out. The book apparentally calls for a screw bolt which does'nt seem right given the application. Its not really a critical area how ever it it comes loose it could put stress on the fuel fitting.

No, I have closed off my fuel tank covers.
I used the largest diameter bolt I could, I will guess a
AN-3, as far as the length goes , ( again a Guess ) perhaps a
-22A ?

Sorry I can't help you out any more , can you get the length from the
parts book and or the bolts you removed ??

If you are speaking of the AN520-10R26 screws (Fig 7, item 41) then you should know they are merely machine screws, and can be replaced/superceded with MS35207-270 (which are Phillips-head duplicates of AN520-10R28... or 1/16" longer) from Aircraft Spruce (priced at .08 cents) and the nuts are AN365-1032.

Those nuts can be a pain to get in and out. I made a helpful tool for getting at them. Take a cheap Ace hardware 3/8'" wrench and put the box end in a vice. Heat with a propane torch and bend the wrench at a 90 degree angle just above the box end. Use tape as described above to hold the nut.
