The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I love polished aluminum planes, and really like the idea of having a somewhat original paint scheme.
I am aware of the work involved and doubt I will undertake anything anytime soon. I may polish parts of the RV-8 once it is finished.
Having said that, what is involved in stripping the paint down bare enough to polish the fuse? Would I have to remove the wings / fabric? What was the original paint like on the ragwings? Were the wings painted silver / gray? Anyone have any "stock" pictures?

Thomas, I have an original photo of the 1948 170 that I can scan for you when I return home from this trip.
I believe you can strip the paint and polish your fuselage without removing the wings, but it will require care that you do not get stipper on any other surfaces. You'll also want to remove inspection plates/fairings and tape (aluminum foil tape is best) any openings.
Most fabric wings were painted silver with either black or white registration numbers.

George Do you have any documentation on the black Numbers? I painted mine black and have always wondered if that is correct. I have never seen any color pictures of a ragwing taken in the early years that would confirm the color of the #s. Tom I will send you a picture of my ragwing bu PM as I have not figured out how to post them on here yet. It is painted and done as close to original as any I have seen.
