I don't know the specifics of the installations, but can the Javelin and the Flint wing tanks be installed on a 170A?

According to the Flint website their STC covers the 170A and 170B but not a straight 170. http://www.flintaero.com/Cessna_150-205.htm

The Javelin 18 gal. tank is approved under the Type Cert. (A-799) for all 170s.

Are you asking if both systems can be put in the aircraft at the same time for that much more fuel capacity? Thats alot of air time! I don't know about the Flint tanks and how they are plumbed. The Javelin tank is pumped into the right tank while flying off the left tank. (this is accomodated by flying the fuel out of the right tank first, then switching to the left and pumping fuel from the Javelin into the right, then using the right again). The fuel is pumped out of the Javelin tank faster, so in time you can figure out how to keep the fuel pretty much balanced side to side in the tanks.I have a Javelin in my B model with a Lyc 0360, and can cruise about 5 hours. Way long enough for me. I can fly from mid-Nebraska to past Fort worth , Tx., without stopping, but I can't sit much longer than that anyway. Jon

Jon,

Where can you purchase a Javelin tank for a C170B? :?: How much fuel does it contain? :?: Where is it located? :?:

I assume that since you have one you probably like it pretty well.

Thanks in advance. :)

The Flint tanks are wingtip tanks and add additional spanwise length to the wings. (Check your hangar doors to see if you'll still fit.)

The Javelin tank is aproved per the type certificate, but they are out of business. Occasionally a setup can be found in the salvage yards/auctions/etc. It is basically the same as the excellent 18 gal. baggage-floor O & N tank still available for the Cessna 172 series.

George, the Flint tanks for the 170 fit into the two outmost wing-bays and do not extend the wingspan. I believe you are thinking of the C206 tanks which are extensions.

Hmmmn You may be right. Seems that's what the Flint folks told me when I asked them to donate to us. I'll check on it.

OK, I won't check on it. (Thanks. Yeah...I must've been thinking of when I had my 206.) Looks like $4300 plus 50 hours labor @ $34/hr ($1700)comes to about $ 6K to carry another $100 of fuel. (24 gals or 3 hrs endurance)
The O&N costs $2450 plus 25 hrs @ $34/hour ($850) coming to $3300 to carry $70 of fuel (18 gals or 2.3 hrs)
Interesting.

I guess the advantage to the Flint is you don't take up baggage space (not that you would be able carry much with all that fuel on board). Besides, both these mods far exceed my bladder endurance. :)

By the way, where are you finding labor for $34/hr!! Most of the places out here are charging $70+.

My IA charges me $15/hr for my owner-assisted annual (he inspects only.) His assistant charges $34/hr for actual wrench-twisting/rivet-bucking when I need help. :?

Those labor rates are a good representative reason why I never wanted to try to earn my living on my A&P Certificate. Try to get your Ford or Chevy repaired at those kinds of rates.---and they don't have to sign any log books either.
Any A&P/IA that works for $15.00/hr. has to be a really good buddy or seriously mentally deficient . Wetbacks make more than that picking strawberries, and strawberry containers don't have log books to sign off for an annual inspection.

Yep. My wife's Saturn can't be fixed by anyone when it breaks because you can't get the parts unless it's driven to Austin (90 miles roundtrip)...except it only goes 25 miles on a battery charge and it's computer shuts down....and the gear-shift then is locked and can't be shifted. (And the auto-electric company won't touch it because they can't get parts like bruses/bearings for the alternator. Saturn never has one in stock, so the alternator is 3 days backorder...and costs $590 plus tax.) They get $80/hr to be parts-replacers and they always manage to get 2 hours to R&R an alternator. (Mounted at the botton of the engine compartment on a transverse engine.)
A 2000 Saturn LS-1, within 4 years had two alternators, air conditioner condenser flex-line replaced twice due to defective rubber in the hoses, an engine main-bearing oil-seal, ..... and three recall programs for lighting issues and door-handle mechanism issues and engine ignition/computer issues (the only things covered by warranty was the recalls.)
Any other GM product could have been handled by the local GM dealer....but not the Saturn. Nope. A whole day wasted and 90 miles roundtrip and usually several days wait for parts.
Saturn.....never again.
