Corrosion Alert

I just want to make known of a situation that arose while performing a landing gear upgrade and pponk install. After removing the old landing gear severe corrosion was found on the outboard gear attach fitting. There is no way of stopping this type of corrosion, so we need to keep a watch for this.

Good catch. I remember back in the 80's John Benham had an artical in the 170 News entitled "Gentlemen, remove your landing gear" or something like that. He had discovered the same corrosion problem.
Would be a good idea to pull the gear on a 40-50 year old airplane and see what things look like. If their good, do it again in maybe 10 years.

Vic, is the threaded rod in seen through the Gear leg hole some kind of aid in removing the corroded part?

Yep, Eric came up with the Idea so we could move and also remove the fitting by spredding ever so slightly the foward and aft gear box. It was also the only solution for manuvering the piece for riveting the upper intercostal and lower shear tie bracket.
Can you spot the 170 in the picture???

Vic why are your wings off? Seeing flying photos of your rag wing are helping me stick to finishing the restoration on my rag wing. Hope its nothing serious. nick

nothing too serious, got smoke and soot damage due to a fire in a adjacent hangar. Wings are almost done, interior is being worked on and getting ready to strip the fuselage in the next day or two.

I forgot I did read about the fire. I just finished installing pponk inboard and outboard bulkheads on my plane. In fact I finally finished installing the main center floor board with the new seat rails and put my plane back on the gear again, at least for a little while. nick
