I am having the Mark 12 removed from my 170a and would like to have the lower instrument panel covers (currently not installed) put back on when a radio goes back in.

However, my panel is missing a good portion of the brackets that the panel cover screws go into. I checked my parts manual and I am not finding them in the diagram. Anyone have a part number or source for some of those brackets? I think they rivet to the panel and it looks like there are maybe 3 of them for each cover (left and right).

I am looking at Figure 35 - Instrument Panel. Part number 28 (Screw) goes into the bracket I am looking for. I do not see the bracket shown or labelled. My parts book isn't the clearest...

Those brackets are just a simple "L" shape. One leg of the "L" has a two rivits that holds it to the panel and the other leg has a single hole and a Tinnerman to accept the crew from the panel cover. As sphillips said the simplest thing is to make them yourself. They are not structural and neither is the cover that attaches to them. Once the cover is in place you'll never see them anyway.

There are two required per side - One at the top (where screw 28 goes) and one on the inboard side just above the point where the center plexi-panel meets the cover. There are two additional screws that go into the bottom of the cover, but those screw into existing holes in the bottom of the main panel so there are no additional brackets required.

In the 170B IPC they DO have a part number (but, as you said, NOT in the 170A IPC... odd). In the 170B IPC Figure 38, item 6 - 0413151 Bracket - Panel Shield Mounting. This is for s/n 20267-25372 - i.e. the 1952 model year. These would be the same brackets that you need since the 1952 model year had the same panel layout as the 170A.

If you don't have a 170B IPC, go here: http://www.micro-tools.com/pdf/cessna/ and download the 170B manual (it's a .pdf file) then go to page 70 (figure 38 ). It has better diagram of the panel for this particular problem than the 170A manual.

The bracket is made of .032" aluminum that is 1/2" wide. The leg perpendicular to the panel stands .41" out and the leg riveted to the panel is 1.18" long. The outboard brackets are riveted with universal head 470AD rivets from the panel side. The inboard brackets, near the control yoke tube guide, are riveted from the rear of the panel with countersunk 427AD rivets. Note that this bracket has a tinnerman nutplate A6191-8Z-3 mounted on top of it. These are to attach the stationary instrument sub panel in place behind the main panel. See the 170B fig. 37-60. I couldn't find a source for the tinnerman nuts listed. Maybe others here would know.
