Cabin speaker

Any body have a source for cabin speakers? The speaker was removed by previous owner on my 55B and modified with a god awful abortion to accept a 4" speaker. The original speaker attached to the cabin roof and supported dome lite and headliner bows. All of the 6" ones I've found locally are not deep enough to attach to roof.

I replaced my inoperative speaker with a quam 5.25 inch speaker, as far as attatching it to the cabin top we had to make a bracket, as you mentioned the replacement speakers are not as deep. I got mine thru work, however they can be had at chief or spruce, chief is a little bit cheaper on the price

Hope this helps

Do you have to have a speaker? I was thinking of removing mine to save some weight.

I ordered one from cessna when I redid mine. It didn't cost that much, but that was 14 years ago

When it came in it was too short so I had to make an AL spacer; other than that it was a direct replacement

Gary,
I also replaced my speaker with the same part as Vic mentioned previous. I made a spacer (aluminum) that was tapped on one side for the through the roof screws and epoxied the other side to the speaker magnet. Worked great.

I was thinking the same, but when I had the headliner down to clean some surface corrosion I just replaced it. It wasn't a month later I was flying and my headset plug fell apart, of course my other headset was on the hat shelf

. So out came the spare mike out of the glove box and I became a fully operational family car of the air again.

I checked with Cessna today. Would you believe they want $183.00 for replacement speaker. Plus it is considered HAZMAT, so shipping would be higher. I going with the option Vic and George used and make a spacer/bracket. Thanks for all the idea's. Trake, I also have had to use back up mike/speaker a couple of times.

To answer your question Tracy, no you don't need a speaker. Just as you don't need a radio or any device that would activate a speaker.
What ever speaker you might choose needs to be the correct ohms matching your aircraft system. At the moment I can't recall what that is but someone will chime in I'm sure.
Also if you remove your speaker and have an audio panel you may have to terminate the speaker side with a resister for a load if the audio panel is not self terminating.
I'm far from an expert on this so check with someone who is before visiting Radio Shack and attacking your system with wire cutters.

You do need a speaker if you fly in airspace or on a flight plan that requires communication per FARs. (Actually, not having read that rule in a while, it might be that one requires a headset...if one has a speaker) ... but you get the idea.
The original speaker was 4 Ohms....not the common 8 Ohms that Radio Shack etc. usually handles. (Might explain some of the price difference with some aircraft stuff....but I've found 4 Ohm speakers at some stereo suppliers. The mounting bracket for our Cessna's is the usual complication. The speaker req's a mount thru the roof....not insurmountable, but can be an irritation.)
Do NOT skimp on a cheap speaker. The cabin speaker must be capable of dealing with high volume levels without distortion. Marine speakers can be a good replacement due to their wet-location speaker cones and high vibration and noise-level accomodations.

Many moons ago while trouble shooting an inop speaker, I found a dead mouse in the headliner that had OD'd on the cone paper. I raided an old 8-track stereo that just happened to have a speaker that fit perfectly. It has worked perfectly since 1984. I don't rember if it was an 8 or 16-ohm, but it works fine. (It evidently has mouse-repellent cone paper.
