Aeroshell recall??

A friend whose flying days are over just sold his airplane. He offered me some Aeroshell oil that he recently got that had been stored for a few years. He mentioned something about remembering a recall,warning,AD,or something about Aeroshell oil a few years back. I kinda remember something too,there was some contamination of a certain lot(s) of oil.
Anybody have any onformation about this?

Other than some batches being contaminated with MMO 8) ...this is the only info I have on it. Sorry not to be more helpful. :wink:
The original notice from Shell (Subsidiary, Equilon) :

Equilon Lubricants L.L.C is the producer of Aeroshell, the world's best selling aviationpiston engine oil. We take seriously the level of confidence placed on Aeroshell products by the aviation community and individual customers like you.
In this spirit, we are acting quickly to voluntarily recall specified batches of products thatfall below our quality standards and replace them, at no cost to you, with Aeroshell products that do meet our quality requirements.
Aeroshell is manufactured to exceed industry specifications, and has enjoyed years of proven performance. However, a recent batch of Aeroshell product may not have met our stringent requirements. A mechanical problem in our blend plant equipment may have allowed some debris to be carried from the blend tank to our packaging equipment.

While the problem has since been corrected and measures put in place to preclude this from happening in the future, the debris that did get to the packaging equipment may have allowed some Aeroshell products to fall under the desired level of internal quality control. Therefore, we are recalling specified batches of products and replacing them with Aeroshell products that do meet our quality requirements.

These measures are necessary because of the high standards we have for the Aeroshell product line and our commitment to the aviation community.

The bottles may be identified by holding them up to a strong light and looking for the ID which is printed in black, on the black bottle. (Hard to see.) Good luck. -George

Aeroshell Recall??

Several years back, there was a recall / warning that some plastic bottles of aviation oil (I think it was AeroShell) had been filled with box sealing glue at the factory and somehow got shipped out as oil. It only involved a bottle or two so you had to make sure the stuff you poured into your aircraft engine was real oil, not white glue or MMO :wink: . -- David

If I'm not mistaken the "WR" number is the date of the batch. WR102301 was packaged Oct, 23, 2001. My records show that Aeroshell notified everyone around the end of Nov, first of Dec, 2001.

Some years back there was something about the cap design that if you were not careful it could drop the ring or the cap gasket into the engine but I forget exactly what it was. I have since then been very sure the complete cap and gasket came off before I pour the oil in.
