I was looking at the regs on preventative maintenance; for those of us with polished airframes it sure looks like it is not covered under FAR 43. So does that mean we cannot polish an airframe unless supervised by an A&P.

Oh yes the appendix does cover polishing your airplane.
FAR 43.13 (c)(9) Refinishing decorative coating of fuselage, balloon baskets, wings tail group surfaces (excluding balanced control surfaces), fairings, cowlings, landing gear, cabin, or cockpit interior when removal or disassembly of any primary structure or operating system is not required.
FAR 43.13 (c)(10) Applying preservative or protective material to components where no disassembly of any primary structure or operating system is involved and where such coating is not prohibited or is not contrary to good practices.

Polishing is a perverted method of arm-fatigue and a form of detailed cleaning.
