Just out of curiosity, do the STCs for the Lyc 180 HP conversion specify a specific model of the O-360 or are there several options listed? I know there is a huge number of I/O 360 engine models available. Thanks.

I do not believe there is a STC available for the Lycoming IO-360 engine on a C-170.

I have a friend that installed a Lycoming IO-360 on a legally tail wheeled C-172. He was issued an experimental development permit, but they, the FAA, stalled him for years, always asking for something else, until he finally gave up. I performed a condition inspection on the airplane and he sold it to a guy in Soldotna, Alaska. I heard that the new owner finally got it approved up there. He must have received a ferry permit from Alaska or else he just bootleg a ferry flight north. I'm pretty sure the local fuzz would have refused it.

Thanks for the replies. I don't plan on the upgrade but have been curious for a while. During overhaul of an IO-360-B1B on a Piper Arrow 2 years ago, I was amazed at all the many different designations listed in the parts manual. that got me thinking, if I came upon a good used -380-XXX, what would the odds be that it would be approved for my 170?

I would secretly get up late at night during north TX thunderstorms, and pray that the hangar would fall on the Arrow, the plane would be totaled (no engine or prop damage of course), and I would get the engine for a song from the insurance company

Well, the summer passed, I sold the Arrow sans storm damage, and am destined to plod along at 102 KIAS for a long time
