The International Cessna^® 170 Association

Hello all,

I believe that an STC exists to install a drain valve at the low point at the bottom of the fuel selector, and I think that I have seen them on eBay. I have a '54 170B, and have looked at the drain plug that is supposed to be removed and drained at annual (mine appears to have not been done for years).

Has anyone done the installation of a daily type of sump drain on the selector valve bottom? Do I really need to get the STC or can I simply install a operable drain where the plug is (after obtaining my required Field Approval, of course!)?

they didn't get an STC or a field approval I don't think But it was years ago

I put one of those drain valves in my 172 about a year ago. I think it is a worthwhile addition.

I bought the one that is STC'd from C-mods Inc. 919-471-9492. http://www.c-mods.com
It was $30.00 for the valve and STC delivered to my door.

They offered a choice between a flush style valve or one with a stem that protrudes through the belly skin. I chose the latter thinking it would be easier to access with the sump jar.

Bob in most cases you can buy the valve with the STC making the paperwork simple for not much more than the valve itself. It's pretty painless. You could just buy the valve and put it in with no paperwork and no one but you would know. But why? So save $10. You'll spend more than that trying to get an approval otherwise and to keep your aircraft legal $10 is pretty cheap.

Christmas day two years ago I had some time to kill and looked at Ebay to find one of these auctions about to end and no one had bid. I placed the minimum bid and won for less than I could buy the valve. When finishing the transaction I was asked how many I wanted. I selected two. It was Christmas after all.

Did mine with the C-mods STC about 2 years ago. Fairly quick and simple. The hardest part was the safety wire. Now if you want to talk about thoes rudder return springs thats another story.
