172 / 170B wing change

Hi,
I recall reading about a "letter" from Cessna from somewhere , that said something along the lines that the
172 wing ( within certian model numbers and serial numbers) was able to go one the C 170B.
Does anyone on have a copy they could forward to me @
johnatkins@rogers.com
I have a 172 wing on my C 170B, and require the supporting paperwork.
And or any other supporting paperwork would be appreciated.
I looked on the Association website , but couldn't locate it there.
Thanks John

John the letter came from my aircraft records. It does not specifically approve any wings but spells out what Cessna would consider appropriate wings for transplant.
Ordinarily at the time the letter was written one would get this letter then find the wings following the guidelines set in them then request a specific approval letter from Cessna once the part numbers where given. A specific letter was then drafted by the Cessna tech rep for the FAA in support of the transplant. Of course the FAA could approve or disapprove regardless of the letter. The tech rep that had this procedure in place has retired from Cessna and we have no idea what their current procedure would be. I'd call them and ask if I were you.
The L-19 wings on my A model were approved in 2001 solely on the merit of the first letter with no specific letter drafted by Cessna.
In the mean time since you are a member and I know you will send a few extra bucks to the association if you find the letter useful, I'll forward it to your email.

John your email didn't work. Maybe it didn't like the attachments or it is full. PM me with another one to try or let me know if I should try again.

Boy Bruce, if you still had L-19 flaps you really could make a short landing at Petit Jean

I've read all the 337s the association has. I don't remember any specific 337s that might help your cause but there maybe one or two. To be honest the letter and maybe a call to Cessna will be as strong a case as you are likely to find.
BTW how do you know you have a 172 wing? I'll bet it looks like a B model wing and I'd challange anyone to prove it's not.

That makes sense, since they are identical and share many of the same pn's even when later 172 wings are compared. In other words, they share the same parts bins. You doubtless have a 170B wing with a repair, is all.

I agree with George. You have nothing more than a repaired 170B wing.

One of the differences between the wings is the location of the door catch and the design of it's backing doubler. The 170B catch attaches at the fwd spar, including 2 of it's fasteners that pick up the lower flange of the spar. The 172 catch is located about 8 inches aft of the front spar in the fuel tank bay area. Unless someone has replaced this skin in an effort to "convert" the wing from a 172 to a 170, you'll see 8 rivets at this location that were installed to plug the holes when the catch was relocated for the 170. If they replaced the skin, your wing is a 170B wing. That's the only difference I know of between the 170B wing and 172 thru D wing.

Why not throw away the realease tag that says "172"? It's awfully difficult to keep all the paperwork on fifty year old airplanes, and I'll bet that nobody except an excessively pickey IA would even notice.

I feel I need to keep the records for the repair to the rear spar.
and,..
IF it is possible to get the paper work all in order then I think it
is best to have it all in order.

I wouldn't get rid of the tag. I would just take the position it is a 170B wing repaired with the correct part which happens to be incorrectly identified as being just for a 172. See if anyone can prove other wise. Bet they can't.
One clue you should track down further for your own mind is the door stop position that wingnut mentioned.
