170A Exhaust Replacement

All:

I need help finding sources for a new exhaust system (manifold and pipes & shrouds if different than the pancake style).

This 170A that I just bought ten days ago has extended pipes that flared back under the engine (the original holes were patched over). The manifold is cracked badly and the flanges have numerous pits and flakes.

The "pancake style" seems hard to replace, but I would like to keep the extensions if possible.

Who can I get advice / options from?

Thank you in advance.

Lets understand what you have.

it would seem from your post that you have pancake mufflers with extensions that do not exit the cowl in the normal holes but out the back bottom. The pancakes are standard equipment but the extensions are not. There are two people, Pat Bartone and John Benham, who make and sell extensions that I think you are describing. The approval for the extensions are either a one time 337 or by STC depending on who, when and how they were bought. I'm not sure either of the extensions are intended for the pancake style mufflers either. I'd bet that your extensions are copies of the Bartone/Benham extensions and I' wouldn't be surprised to find it an illegal installation.

You are right that it is not possible to find new pancake style replacements and no one will rebuild them. So that leaves used and most of them are junk by now.

Now for the replacements.

An entire stock Hanlen Wilson style exhaust system soup to nuts can be purchased from AWI, http://www.awi-ami.com. AWI by this time might also have all the heat muff shrouds required otherwise you will have to either manufacture them locally or visit salvage yards. BTW 172 mufflers though they look a like are bigger and NOT THE SAME. Approval to switch to the Hanlen Wilson system is through the Type Certificate Data Sheet for the 170.

The extensions as previously mentioned can be bought from TIC170A members Pat Bartone or John Benham. The latest info I have is the Pat will sell the parts but NOT his STC which means you will have to get a field approval. Something not easily done today. John Benham will sell you the parts and his STC so the approval is already done. The difference between the two extensions is hard to detect mainly being the way the pipes hang in the rear.

If you decide to go with the extensions and need contact info you could join the association and reap a whole bunch of benefits not the least is helping to support this forum or you could ask here and I'm sure end it to someone will provide it to you privately. I Could be way of base but I believe Benham was charging $500 for the extension parts and STC. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

When you contact AWI, Inc., ask for Charlie Felds. A 170 A model uses two LEFT SIDE mufflers... do NOT obtain a right side Hanlon Wilson type. (Only 170 b models subsequent to 25352, 1952 models) use the right side Hanlon Wilson muffs.

Charlie can also supply the heater muffs, and all other hardwared.

Thank you much.

I am a new member as of last week and will need to find John Benham if that is possible.

I will contact awi-ami too with the recommendations that gahorn made as well. I "may" just have to abandon the race-car look and go with what is in stock and approved.

Again thank you for your help, really!

Sincerely,

I had to replace my "pancake" style exhaust a year or two ago, and AWI provided a great product. I had to get the cross-brace from a different source since the pancake style didn't have one, and the brackets to attach the cross-brace to the pipes too. I've been happy with the product and recommend them. Make sure you mention you are aTIC170A member, I think I got a discount for being a member :D

As a member you can download the entire Directory from the Members Only page.

Mod Note: Both Benham and Bartone are no longer in the muffler business due to death/health reasons. Those mods are now available from fellow Member Doug Mueller who purchased the rights to those systems.
