Good Evening Everyone.

I have a 170B rudder question to ask without having my IPC which is at the hanger. On the lowest of the 3 rudder attach points, mine has two pieces of material which sandwich the bracket on the plane. That lowest bracket on the plane almost seems to have a solid bushing welded on the bracket.

On my rudder, that lowest attachment point has two hole sizes. The lower, is the size of the bolt, the upper hole is about 3/8" or slightly larger. I think what happened was that the weight of the rudder over time has pressed the upper half of the bracket down on what seems to be that solid bushing, hence wearing the hole out to the diameter of that bushing (I'm sure that's not the correct term). When I removed the rudder it had a fender type washer on the top half of the bracket under the bolt head.

Sorry for the lack of part numbers...

Any thoughts or experience from you guys ???

When you get your IPC, refer to Fig. 25-26 & 27 for lower Bearing and Bushing and Fig.15-13 for the lower Rudder Bellcrank (sandwich in your terms). Fig. 15 also show the upper two Rudder hinges and bearings.

What is interesting is the lowest hinge bearing and bushing is different than the upper two. That may be causing you the confusion. Suggest you check to see if the bearing has slipped down thru the bushing.

I'm at the shop and checked the IPC Figure 15-item 13 as you mentioned. Yup, the bellcrank is the item and the upper hole is the one that is larger. Now I have to measure the hole and see what has happened (it's over at the paint shop).

I checked the bushing - Figure 25-items 26 & 27 which are intact. More to follow...
Do you know if the upper and lower holes in the rudder bellcrank are the exact same size? I have a feeling I may be in search of a replacement bellcrank soon.

This is another Jim, I'll guess you'll be needing a new 0433113 item #13 figure #15 as you mentioned if you need it perfect. There's no rudder thrust bearing and it appears that this is one of those things that some of us will might encounter. Much like the flap rollers digging into the sides of the flap support arms.

Yes, after inspection of the rudder today, the top hole in p/n 0433113 Fig 15, item 13 is worn way out of tolerance . Their was a washer, that was used as a bushing to sit in the upper hole with a fender washer on top of that. I took some pictures and some day will get the ability to post on this forum.
Anyway, I have to get a new bellcrank. I'll post a request and see if any of the members have one on the shelf... List price is about 572 + or -.

Just glad I was able to get it before the paint was applied.

That's a feature of how the software works. When making an initial response, previous msgs appear if one scrolls down, however during "edits" ...other responses are not displayed.
