i am not interested in putting one on because of a recent overhaul, but i see an STC for a conversion to put on a lycoming 0-320. does anyone have one, and if so do you like it?
i just couldn't help but think that since you get "almost the same" horse power out of an 0-320 but with a lot less weight that it would give you a boost.

I don't have a 0-320 conversion and have only seen one. It was on a Canadian members plane. He was happy with it. Probably more because the constant speed prop allowed him to us all 160 HP available. Remember our 0-300 only develops 145 HP at 2700 rpm and there aren't many planes propped to achieve that rpm on takeoff.

The 0-320 was not a very popular conversion it seems because the 0-360 is the same physical size, is just as popular, and would be the same amount of work in the conversion. The only down side of the 0-360 over the 0-320 is they cost a bit more. As for the 0-320 conversion if I recall correctly it is for the 160hp version of the 0-320 with a constant speed prop. This version of this model engine isn't as plentiful as the 0-360 so if your going to do it your probably going to us the 0-360.

just wondering. i just recently overhauled my C-145-2 so no there will be no engine upgrades or changes for at least as long as i own the airplane. Mainly i was just wanting to hear someone brag about their bird if they did have this conversion.

Just the other I spent the afternoon with a friend of mine assisting him with ground run ups and post maintenance checks on the Lear 65 he flies. I got a good look at the APU in the tail of the Lear and thought to myself - that would fit nicely on my C170.

There is one on the airport here. The guy use to run it on floats but now the tires just go flat. When i was looking at buying it the performance was stated to be WAY better then a stock 170 and not as good as the 360. haha I never got a chance to fly it. It is not STCd but field approved.

here's a dumb question. what would you use for the engine mount, i.e. the guy who has the flat tire one?

I believe the engine mount for a lycoming O-360 would also fit an O-320. At least it would on certain models.

Would you happen to remember if that O-320 installation required cowl modification? Does it need the bumps on the corners like the O-360?

The 0-320 engine is narrower than the 0-360 by an inch or so, you shouldn't need cowl bumps.

You guys are right there are no cowl bump outs. I had to go look first.

I saw an artical on a Cessna 170A/B with a Turbo Lyc O-320. It was cheaper to put in and had more HP at altitued. Less fuel burn and out performed the Lyc- O360. WatkinsNV

The association's 170 Book has an article about this conversion written in the 1979-1980 time frame. does anyone know if this airplane is still around?
