Hand hold rope material

Last summer one of my hand hold ropes inside the cabin door separated as I climbed aboard. It failed just about in the middle. The original material was a dense, round cotton rope about 5/8" (I'm guessing - I did not measure it) in diameter. It had a light chain running through the middle of the rope. The chain is the same type of folded link that is used to attach the tail wheel steering springs to the rudder and tail wheel. The chain was not connected to the swagged fittings on the end of the rope. I was able to pry open and remove the end fittings. I would like to find some more of this rope or a suitable alternative and re-swag the original ends back on. Any help? Much obliged. Bruce

Here's how mine were done. Used heavy cord which was crimped with the metal end-fasteners (which ties them to the end fittings) then covered with leather.

What did you use for cord and where did you get it?
