Southern US Airspace Warnings Terminated

If there were not special notams issued mid week this last week for California, New Mexico and Texas there should have been! I had the pleasure of flying a 3 day pairing with fellow association member and 170 owner Don Nolen this past week. We had met briefly several times over the last year but this was our first opportunity to fly together. Our conversations (above 10,000 feet of course) quickly deteriorated into 170's, C-145s, service bulletins and where to fly to on the weekends around North Texas. Don is a true gentleman and his 25 years in the Guppy show on every leg. He is also very patient with the relatively new FO who is easily distracted by shiny things and airplane talk.

Southwest is currently in the process of updating the automation in our fleet and everyone is learning the joys of auto-throttles and VNAV (yes, that shrill sound you hear from Dallas Love Field is that of Southwest Airlines being drug, kicking and screaming, into the 1980's!). Still lots to learn and we never hesitated to turn stuff off and fly it like a 170 when she didn't act like we expected.

The last day of the pairing, Thursday, was 5 legs around Texas (the Texas Two-Step in SWA lingo) with winds gusting up to 40 at every airport we visited. It is a treat to watch someone who can use a rudder finesse the 73' just like an A-model. Don has not flown a B model nor I an A. We have plans to get together this spring and swap rides and notes.

All in all, a great trip.

Besides two knuckleheads blasting around the south west US spending more time talking about 170's than listening to center??? Any more detail than that I'll never tell

That was definitely a superb 3-day! What a good time except for all the winds. We actually made it without a call from the Chief Pilot!
