Well, I'm surprised nobody else has posted about this yet... I got up this morning and checked my email, read through the AVweb issue for today. And saw the story about the 22 planes lost in Ottawa, thought I'd post it here... http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/St ... ml#gallery
I notice one of them is a C170B  (C-FFTU is the tail #) so thought it was of special relevance to all of us C170 lovers... Hope y'all have a good day, besides this bad news :D

This reminds me of the need to emphasize that aircraft tie-downs should be of sufficient strength and must be consistently used. In today's litigious environment, I'd hate to think that my failure to use adequate tie-downs could end up in me being liable for damages suffered but not covered by an adjacent aircraft at the airport.

Remember, the thing about tie-downs is: They must be capable of exceeding your aircraft's lifting capability. (Our 170's can lift more than their 2200 lb gross weights.) And tie-downs MUST be used t o be effective, EVEN FOR SHORT un-attended periods.

I complained to our closest municipal airport manager about the little "strings" supplied at the tie-downs and he wasn't interested. But when the city risk-manager was contacted... the local airport got new, longer 5/8" nylon ropes installed.

Speak up at your local airports and carry your own under your rear seat. IMO

Hi Guys-Yes, I too recognized a tail in that wreckage but could not find the tail number listed as a 170 Club Member (From Ottawa area anyway) Was thinking to send a card with regrets. Too Bad. Noted there was at least another 170 there still right side up in those photos. Cheers/BW

Yeah, I was afraid at first that is was Joe Scoles' airplane, but couldn't find either "C" number in the directory.
