I have looked through my Parts list on both the airframe and the engine; but, I can not find the part number for the "air box". Air box may not be the correct technical name; but, it is the device that holds the air filter and connects to the carburetor. I have a scanned diagram of the air box; but, I do not know how to put it in this post.

If anyone knows where I can obtain a new air box; then, please let me know.

The carb heat box, p/n 530852, is available new from Univair for $700. If it's just your shaft that is worn take a look at McFarlane's repair kit FG-105. I see that this also works for airbox p/n 531143. Anybody know what the difference is between these two part numbers? To attach documents or pictures you've scanned click on the tab "upload attachments" which is located below the text you are writing. Then choose the file you have scanned. If it's a picture it should be a .jpg file; a .tiff file won't work. (It helps to find the picture if you have already renamed it something like "airbox.jpg" rather than looking for a number like 530852.jpg.) Third, click "add the file". You will now see the file name below the "File comment:" box in blue script. Often I'll make the remark "click to enlarge" in this comment box to clue guys into the fact that they don't have to look at a thumbnail size picture or text. Finally, place the cursor where you want the picture to appear in your text and then click "place inline".

Thanks so much for all the information. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get $700.00. I was hoping that the part was not too expensive ($100-200 would have been nice). The problem is not a worn out shaft; but, the box got crushed so it is a lot on the deformed side. I might be able to use my hammers and dollies to see if I can straighten it out. The $700.00 price tag will certainly motivate me to see if I can repair the carb heat box. Thanks for giving me the correct technical name for the Carb heat box.

I'll look at the repair kit and see if that might be useful in restoring the carb heat box.

Thanks again for telling me how to store a picture in my post. The one I have is a .tiff; but, I can easily create the .jpeg images.

Your wish is my command! You might like the $180 price from D&E Aircraft better. See p/n 100-300-170. D&E says their parts are sold by Univair and several other major aircraft parts retailers. So my guess is that $700 part from Univair is actually made by D&E. I did not find anything to indicate that the airbox is PMAed so you should check with your mechanic before buying/installing it. I've read a lot of glowing reports about Jack Vazquez' work on rebuilding carb airboxes. He would be a good source of advice. On McFarlane's website they rave about their "Elastomer" bearing that replaces the original needle bearing. They are used on the early models of the C-172. It shouldn't be too much work to get a field approval to install them on the 170 if your mechanic doesn't view this as a minor alteration. At $46 each, it seems a little pricey.Continental came out with a new carb airbox for the O-200 back in 1975 that has teflon bushings. These bushings, p/n 641527, cost about $9 ea. from Cessna. See the Service Bulletin on this subject in the Maintenance Library.

Thanks a lot. One of our Cessna 170 Association members has come up with an air box for me. I also bought a baggage door from him a few years ago.
