20267 is the start of the "B" model serial #s (1952). Looks like you'll need 170 & 170A IPCs to get the respective s/n application.

My 170A manual lists the part numbers for the gear legs as 0441138-3 for serial numbers 18003 to 19219 and 0541114 for serial numbers 19219 and up. Take into account that this manual pre-dates the B models. The part numbers 0541103-2 and 0541103-1 for serial numbers 18003 through 19219 are given as right and left side because these are complete assemblies. Ditto for 0541103-6 and 0541103-5 which are left and right specific assemblies for serial numbers 19219 and up, again taking into account this pre-dates the B models. To me this would indicate the actual gear leg springs are interchangeable. I recently removed mine and sandblasted them and noted that the right one had 7x10 stamped on the end and the left had 7x22, so I re-installed them the same way. Hope this helps! Gear legs

Post by Koop »

I found the information I need by contacting Tom at XPMods in Wenatchee, Wa. I would recommend him to anyone with a question on landing gear. Hope that's ok with Tom. I had been searching for three months and Eric said to try Tom and he was right. Koop

I guess I didn't look close enough at the IPC. I do see now that the gear legs themselves ("spring-main landing gear") has only one common part number. So to recap:
early model,s/n 18003>19218 (1948>1950) uses p/n 0441138 legs
middle model,s/n 19219>25611 (1951>mid 1953) uses p/n 0541114 legs
late model,s/n 25612 >up (mid 53>56) uses p/n 0541118-2 & -3 lady legs
Look right?

Just out of curiosity, what's the difference between the early model legs (p/n 0441138) and the middle model legs (p/n 0541114)? I'm so used to hearing the "lady leg" vs. non-lady leg discussion, that I didn't realize there were two different models of non-lady leg gear.

"Lady legs" refers to the design of the late model gear (p/n 0541118-2 & -3). When viewed from the side, there is a narrowing of the leg just above the point where the axle attaches. The leg then widens out slightly to accomodate the axle attachment. This feature looks like an ankle and has led to the nickname of "lady legs". These gear are not interchangeable between sides as the earlier gear is and has specific left/right part numbers as indicated by the "-2" & "-3" in their part numbers.

That was news to me too,I thought there was early (48-mid 53) and late (mid 53-on,"lady") legs only. Don't know the difference.

Hmmmm... another 170 mystery. Something to investigate in our spare time.

I recently recieved an STC to install Cessna 180 gear legs 0741001-1 and 0741001-2 or 0741001-3 and 0741001-4 or 0741001-5 and 0741001-6 on the 170B. Thought I would check to see if sufficient interest exists in that conversion to bother with the paperwork necessary to transfer the STC to others. This might help some who have the gear installed with clouded paperwork.

I have a 1952 170B. My flying group does a lot of back country flying - Idaho - Utah. I'm interested in 8.50 Size tires. 1) Will they fit my Cleveland wheels & brakes. 2) Is a field approval - 337 - Or just a log book entry required. Thanks, Glynn.

You will need early Cessna 180 brake mounting torque-plates
(the offset dimensions are different than your stock 170 torque-plates).
You'll need the 1/4" spacers for the wheels, and of course longer
wheel-halve bolts (to allow for the 1/4" spacers) I'm not aware of
an STC for 850s on a 170 (anyone who knows different, please
pipe up). I put 850s on mine via a 337, but the 337 just says
"verified previous installation of 850 tires & tubes on Cleveland
P/N 40-97A 6" wheels. See logbook entry dated blah-blah-blah"

Tony, if an AP/IA does work on your airplane, he is required by law to enter the work into the maintenance records of the aircraft (the logs.) It is a violation to return the aircraft to service otherwise. Tell him to complete the work.
