81D is finally ours!

Post by bagarre »

Its official! The money is gone and the plane is here!
We just brought her back to W00 today and got her nestled into her new tie down.
I need to get some patio pavers to set under the wheels

I start tailwheel time tomorrow morning!!!

Cool. Your are at Freeway Airport. I thought that airport closed years ago. Glad to see it's still open. For those unfamiliar do a search for W00 in your favorite aeronautical mapping software and see what he's got to content with every time he goes flying.

And the good news is if you bust straight through BWI your only 110nm from me.

Plane looks good. Where did you find the instructor?

Beautiful plane. Know you will love it more and more as you get checked out in it. Let's see which 170 Convention do you want to attend :D Next year it is in San Diego 8O just a short flight for you 8O Just think of all the cross country time you will build up 8)

All kidding aside, welcome to the 170 Association. We are all looking forward to see you at some flyin in the future. :D

Freeway is a great little airport. If you can fly there you can fly anywhere, so they tell me.
Runway is 18-36 2400x40 and the prevailing wind is out of the West. Every other landing is crosswind practice.
That and all the airspace. I had 30 hours of instruction before I ever squawk'd 1200 8O

My tailwheel instructor is a friend of mine, Joe Gauvreau. He has a Citabria at Freeway that he uses for instruction and he's got over a thousand hours in a 170 (He used it to commute from Kent Island to College Park). From his log book, you'd swear he's owned and flown every tailwheel airplane since 1940. A really great guy. He's looking forward to teaching me how to fly the airplane instead of the instruments.

San Diego might be a bit far for my first fly in but, I'm looking forward to Lockhaven next year for sure and anything within 500 miles.

I felt the same way until I realized that a long cross country is just several shorter ones flown back to back. About six 350 mile cross countries strung together, and you're in San Diego!

You have a good T/W instructor. Joe also had a beautiful 195 and a Stinson I know of. I learned at Freeway long before the ADIZ. Good luck.
