Continuing on the quest to positively identify my engine, can someone please answer the following...

Is the item circled in this picture what is considered the 5th/6th order damper on the crankshaft, which would identify it as coming from a -2H model (as opposed to the -2) since it also has the 8 hole flange?

... and no, I didn't pull a cylinder just for this purpose! 8)

Ohhhhhhh Boy, are you gonna wish you had spun a nut onto the carry through stud befor you snapped that picture! Lots of discussion here about the main bearings spinning when the crankshaft is turned while these through studs are loose which leads to this :( .

That is the damper. The -2 can have a dampened crank or an undampened crank. The -2H will have a dampened crank assuming no one installed an undampened version since it came from the factory. The -2H engine should have the prop control on the left front pad as well.

In the C-145 series, those engines that originally came with a dampened crankshaft will have the letter D in the serial number (as opposed to the model number).

All right then, it appears I have all the indications of a C-145-2H... I have the crank dampers, I have the provisions for the lever doo-hickey on the crankcase for a 2-position prop, I have a serial number with the letter "D".

The only hiccup is that my 8-hole hub flange also has the 1/4" drilled hole that I thought indicates a non-dampered crankshaft. Evidence in my case would contradict that notion. I'll post a picture of the 1/4" hole later.

As promised, here's a picture of my 8-hole flange with the 1/4" hole clearly visible. Since I clearly have a damper-equipped crankshaft from the previous pic, it looks like the 1/4" hole = non-dampered crank idea is not 100% accurate. I thought this might be helpful for future reference.
