Not necessarily in that order.
One afternoon, I counted well over 20 at Merrill Field alone.

Chains

Can I climb on a soapbox? ....I hate the combination of chains and airplanes. I am personally aware of one Cub that lost a wing due to the failure of a spar attach fitting that the FAA/NTSB attributed to fatigue cracks caused by using chains for tie downs. The pilot was killed when wing came off rig...

Re: carb heat

I prefer to leave the carb heat on and push it in with the throttle in the event of a go around. It just becomes second nature with some practice. I would not like to find out I had developed carb ice while on final during a forced go-around. After run-up I leave the carb heat on until takeoff per ...

Carburetor ice is a function of humidity rather than water in the fuel..... ... I have, however, encountered it in cruise on humid summer days. Also, remember that very cold air is incapable of holding much water in vapor form. The humidity is likely quite low. I've never encountered carbureor ice ...

I'd like to make certain that everyone recognizes this is NOT the rubbing alcohol you have in your bathroom (which is likely diluted with glycerin and water to a 70% mix.) Isopropyl can be purchased at many paint/harware stores, etc., but it is NOT necessarily the same as "Denatured Alcohol&qu...

it. I regularly get water out of the fuel tanks and gascolator on the 170 with its aluminum tanks even while keeping it in a heated hangar with the tanks full. I think they are condensation magnets. Ice crystals in the fuel can plug off the tank screens if allowed to accumulate. HEET can be used in...

I usually wait until the trucks have stopped falling through the ice before I put my plane on skis. .. It happens every year so its a pretty good indication.

Hand propping with a dead battery

The Cessna 170 Book has an article about emergency hand propping a dead battery which refers to jumping the solenoid with either "a wire jumper or a pair of pliers for a minute or two." After this, battery is supposed to hold enough charge to keep the solenoid engaged and allow the battery...

Hi folks - I am a CFI from San Jose, and have 110 hours in a rented C170B. Now buying my own first C170B and need advice. Can anyone answer the following questions: 2. Here's a couple sources I made notes of. I haven't bought anything from them yet but I've read others have had good experiences. Karl Anderson 1-360-7571946 Aircraft northwest, Bow, Washington. Steve: Sorry I can't help but I am curious if you are flying out of Fenland or East Winch. I have two friends who used to fly a J-5 off a farm near Kings Lynn but then bought a Tri-Pacer that was redone at E. Winch. Flyig along the Wash almost looks a bit like home but I suspect the CAA would have y...
