1956 172 door handles
Hello all,
I took a chance and ordered part 4102254 from Chevys of the 40s as I need replacement door handles. They are very nice but don't go on deep enought for the clip to engage on the shaft. Any other members with an early 172 have any luck with door handles. Thanks Pete

Are you CERTAIN?
Does your door include ESCUTCHEONS? Are they the CORRECT ones?
Some escutcheons are too deep, and some aircraft were not equipped with them,...and also, your door upholstery may have been padded excessively to accept them, expecially if someone re-ragged it and failed to remove the previous upholstery.
Later escutcheons: Universal escutcheons:

Why won't it fit? It appears the chevy handle should fit fine. Your old handle is incorrect.

Just thinking that maybe the shaft the handle mounts on was changed at some point, if the old handles are wrong?

Re: 1956 172 door handles
Without examining your shafts, I cannot determine your difficulty. I doubt the shafts are the problem.
The likely trouble I can imagine is interference from upholstery, or improper orientation of handle installation.
I suggest you try to look at another airplane's installation for a comparison, as it makes no sense that the correct handles do not readily fit.
The clip is installed to the handle prior to fitment to the shaft. The handle then slips onto the shaft, and the clip expands, then snaps onto the shaft's groove.

Thanks for your help. I'll be back at the plane in a day or 2 to look at it again.

Re: 1956 172 door handles
Hi looked at the shafts ,I'm guessing they are not the original ones. The handles are much deeper. I looked up the part number and it looks like I need 0511227-7. Any ideas where I might find them. Thanks for your helpgahorn wrote:Without examining your shafts, I cannot determine your difficulty. I doubt the shafts are the problem.

Can you post a pic of the shafts you have currently? (A lot of trouble and effort/freight might be avoided.)
