I am doing a web search of the Airmen database for an IA in my area and looking at the info for a known IA and he is listed as having "Mechanic: Airframe and Powerplant" cert and some are listed as just "Mechanic: Powerplant". I thought an A&P stood for Airframe and Powerplant but that cert did not get them the ability to annual an airplane.
I am sure someone can solve the puzzle for me.
Thanks,
Justin

Re: Searching for an IA
An IA has to have both airframe and powerplant ratings. Under "Ratings" what you are looking for is "Inspection Authorization"

Re: Searching for an IA
Hi Justin,
You can get an A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) or just an A or a P. When you take the tests, they are actually separate tests and not everyone does both. Where we typically see guys with just an A or a P is someone who has just come out of the military. They may have spent 3 years working on avionics repair, or F15 engines, but nothing else. This allows them to meet the requisite experience requirements for that part of the rating, but not the other part, hence they can only test for A or P. For some jobs this may be perfectly adequate. Example: If you work at an engine overhaul shop, why do you need an airframe license?
IA (Inspection Authorization) is an additional rating above A&P. You need so many years of experience, plus another test. A and/or P's can sign off minor repairs, overhauls, and 100 hours, but only an IA can sign off major repairs, 337's, and annuals.

Re: Searching for an IA
Thanks to both of you for the explanation. I am searching landings.com and the only thing listed for my IA is the A&P rating, so I was using that to find other IA's in my area but I am beginning to think that site does not list the IA rated folks in their airmen database. For example Del is only list as an A&P and I'm guessing he's a bit more than that. From your discription DEM an A&P rating can and is a seperate rating, which I always thought it was but was confuzed by my search results. Of course the website only list three search options under certification: Pilot, A&P, and Examiners. Just fgured IA's would be there somewhere. Any suggestions on a resourse?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Justin,
I've found the FAA site to be much more powerful and accurate than Landings. After figuring out how to do airmen certification searches on there, I have never looked back. Give it a try.

Ryan,
Thanks for the info. I did end up on an faa site last night but wasn't smart enough to figure out the secret to the search options but I haven't given up yet.

Just fill out the information page, use "self" as the employer, and you're all set.

Ryan,
That was the site I found but was confused from the initial screen wondering why it was asking for my info. So got past that with your guidance but unless I'm missing something obvious I can't search on just a rating in a specific town, it is requiring a last night. I don't know any last names but the ones already know is an IA. I was hoping to search with unix style expressions like the landings.com site or an IA in cities in my area. Yes the FAA site gives me the rating that Del mentioned but I still need a last name to get anywhere.
