170B float drawings

Post by krill »

Can anyone provide a source for Cessna 170B float install drawings. Actually looking for a list of parts needed to add a float kit to a 170B. Thanks

170 IPC has all of the parts outlined as well as the Cessna drawing part number.

thank you for that response, I assume that IPC has something to do with a Parts Catalogue.

It's NOT a parts "manual".

It's an "Illustrated Parts Catalog"... for the purpose of identifying parts you might wish to purchase. (Do no consider it a "manual" of assembly or maintenance of any authorization whatsoever. It has numerous errors and omissions.)

Float kit drawings do not exist, I installed the parts in mine last winter, the best thing is to go look at one with floats and measure. The parts book is only helpful for part numbers. I can help you if you need it.

I'll take all the help I can get. I know it's not an easy bolt on job. I've been quoted $3500.00 plus parts to do the job in Fairbanks which seems reasonable since I'm already up in Ak part of the year. Just have to find the right parts without breaking the bank. I have a Del-Air baggage door installed and don't know if that would affect anything.

I'm hopefully taking that response as a humorous one... I didn't mean to seem critical.
Ever since I've read several fatal accident reports which likely can be traced to someone using the catalog as a manual, I've taken it on as a personal crusade to erase anyone's unintentional use of the catalog as "data".

Hi George, The comment that float kit drawing do not exist seems rather strange. I recall quite some time ago sending you a copy of the float kit drawing that I had purchased from cessna when I did my install. They were for my 55 170B sn 26509 but would work for any B model. You may still have a copy or forwarded them to the Association. I though that I still had a copy of them here but can't seem to locate them. Maybe they went with the floats when I sold them.

Float kit drawings do exist as well as other Cessna drawings that are plainly marked as property of Cessna with a copyright. As these drawings are marked plainly the Association has a difficult time freely distributing them in such an open forum. That does not mean information contained on them is not shared with members.
CAUTION - My forum posts may be worth what you paid for them!

Bruce,

You know that Cessna is in somewhat of a corner as the TCDS contains float approval and the IPC contains part references. How they can claim that it as proprietary information stumps me. I do know if you go to buy it from them they ding you $350.00 or so.
Keep up the good work and do share the info when you can.

Email me at aeropodinc@gmail.com, I have no concerns about Cessna chasing me down for proprietary information on an airplane they haven't built for 50+ years.

No problem here George, just being a smart ass. However, I would point out that many good mechanics on this forum (including you) HAVE used the IPC as a reference because there is not much specific 170 information out there. You have to glean what you can from the "Cessna 100 series Service Manual" the owners manual and the TCDS. On an airplane this old it is to be expected that sometimes you have to be creatively interpretive.
