I have been trying to locate the STC but what I have been told is that it is being transferred to the 170 association

And the process of transferring it from the last owner to the Association is in progress if you can call it progress. It's been about 6 months since we started. Neither the past owner nor the Association can currently issue an STC without the cooperation of the other.

Just go ahead and install the C-180 gear legs. You can get the STC later if a question ever comes up. I've never seen a member of the FUZZ\out there with a tape measure checking the legs of a C-170. Remember that it's always easier to get forgiveness than permission.

...unless of course, something bad happens before the STC paperwork is completed.

I just seem to get "caught" every time I try even the smallest departure from anything "permitted". Been that way since elementary-school.

Any news on this? Has the STC been transferred to the Association yet?

We got the final paperwork just before Thanks Giving. The email to me from Jan at HQ that it arrived was lost in my spam for a few days. The Board is discussing via email at this moment what the pricing structure will be to buy the STC and that shouldn't take but a week or so to complete.

Thanks.
Reason I ask is I'd like to buy a copy of the STC for 81D for a future install.

David-
We'll get the good news out as soon as we get the details resolved. Having 180 gear on my 170 for the last 7 years, I can tell you they do make a positive improvement, unless, of course, you are a serious originality nut  . The plane sits higher and the stiffer gear makes handling crisper and much less springy. Availability of 180 gear is much better as well if the original gear is damaged beyond repair.

The lady legs I have are stiff enough and in good condition. I thought the extra inches would help with the 80" prop tho.
Good to know that 180 legs are more common..maybe that will make it easier to trade with someone for mine :D
