Cracked cylinder
Annual inspection today revealed a cracked cylinder. My IA suggested I find an overhauled cylinder but my search finds new costs are not much more. Seems to be several choices and opinions on which one to get. I am 590 hrs SMOH. I do want to find something available for immediate shipment. Suggestions please.

Only 590 smoh? Just buy a new one! If your IA hasn't done an engine in a few years he may not realize the pricing these days. Unless you have all the tools yourself and don't mind spending the time, it makes almost no sense to o/h cylinders anymore.

Due to little cost difference to a bought overhauled cylinder where one doesn't know the history and a new one we always go new . Now the choice is which brand is best . We have tried new from the manufactures of the engines also the clones . So far the best is Superior cylinders. Least amount of recalls . We have a client who each year demands a new cylinder on the lowest compression cylinder . He does about 400 hrs a year . BUT this engine is flogged. However one cylinder has escaped the annual cull and has about 1600 hrs still going strong .

Okay so the Superior cylinder seems to be available from several suppliers for about the same cost of $788. Guess it comes down to service and I'm sure most are great suppliers but looking for a little assurance in a choice. How about J&J?

Sorry , can't help with a good supplier, as we are in a different country and get most of our parts directly from the manufacturer. Plus we often order in lots of 10 of the same part no.

I have used J & J in Pleasanton, TX for over 30 years and have nothing but GREAT WORDS to say about them. (And I've bought Superior cyls from them and they provide excellent support!)N4027v wrote:Okay so the Superior cylinder seems to be available from several suppliers for about the same cost of $788. Re: Cracked cylinder
I bought most of the parts (including the Superior cylinders) for my recent Lycoming overhaul from Air Power Inc (Van Bortal) in Texas. The pricing was consistently the lowest, and their service was great. What they didn't have in stock they got fast, and in some cases they subbed more expensive Lycoming parts at the PMA price.
BTW, I called both Superior and ECI for tech support (different parts) and at both places I got the impression I was talking to someone who overhauled approximately 4000 engines. Lycoming's tech support was, well...underwhelming.
