170B wings on a 170A

Post by Cessna 170A »

Will 170B wings work on a 170A and is it an improvement in performance?
Is their an STC available or has it been performed thru a 337? All input will be appreciated.

I would suppose it could be done, but it would be one helluva job and very expensive to reroute and replace all the flap and aileron cabling in the fuselage plus a new set of wing struts and the real expense would be the approval which would most likely require considerable work of a DER. They're quite expensive.
Better to just sell the A model and buy a B model. Much cheaper.

Yes they can be made to work. Yes you can bolt the wings themselves on. Problem is the controls cable runs for the aileron and flaps is not the same requiring some extensive work/changes to the fuselage and a new later flap handle.

If you think a B model wing and flaps is an improvement over the A than it is an improvement. If not then it won't be.

Yes there is actually several STCs but none I know that are supported. So the real answer is, no you can not buy an STC to do this. Your only choice would be a a one time approval through a "337".

If you are asking because you own an A and you think you want a B, listen to BL and sell your A and buy a B. If you know how to drive rivets and are appropriately rated with free time on your hands, own an A without wings and you have a free set of B wings, cables, carry thru spar, pulleys, lots of time and a DAR in your pocket, go for it.

There are A models with B model wings out there, I owned one. There are B models out there with A model struts which removes the dihedral. There are also A models with B model elevators.

Why to you ask?
