Missing baffling part?

Post by Onewinglo »

Guys,
After reviewing a photo of my right side cylinders I noticed a baffling separator is missing (between the cylinder heads). Aircraft Spruce lists 4 required (AF0550117 BAFFLE COMPONENT Part #: 05-03034 Mfr Part #: AF0550117 Special Order).
Is there a good reason this part would have been removed, such as better cooling without it?
Thanks, JP

I believe that missing baffle item is intended to aid cooling.

Frank is correct. Without it air will escape and not be forced over and through the cylinders. Isn't your engine running a little hot?

The missing baffle is exactly the same as the one that is there between the other cylinders. Duplicate that one and get it installed.

Yes my engine is running a little hot. I'll check the left side cylinders to determine how many baffles I need to order. I would make the part myself but as a new pilot and owner I have no (scrap) aluminum to work with...
I'll also order a new oil temp gauge and the correct tail wheel steering spring kit.
TAILWHEEL SPRING KIT 3239 Part #: 06-00008 Mfr Part #: U3239A-101
The smaller springs were installed when I bought the plane.
Currently on vacation and having fun but I look forward to getting home to fly and work on my 170!

Yes, that missing baffle was intended to provide better cooling to that exhaust valve ...and that cyl will run hotter without it.
Replacing it is a good idea.
