TESTING New ELTs
Does your ELT activate?
Perhaps not. Maybe. Have we been lulled into thinking ELT research was over?
Take a look at this link ....http://newswire.net/newsroom/news/00089 ... ivate.html
Watch the video of our 170's First cousin or little brother.
I wonder what the cost of this entire operation was? Did we pay for the facility/ salaries in aviation fuel taxes?

Re: TESTING New ELTs
They had to crash an entire airplane to find out if the ELT worked?
Had it worked, the headline would have read :
"NASA Crashes Cessna to Test Emergency Beacon, Which Activated but No One Noticed"

Saw this the other day. After opening the link on your post you can see an oil cooler in the front of the engine. Not a 172? Or maybe not a O300?

Re: TESTING New ELTs
Interesting video from several different perspectives. Big-big question why did the co-pilot crash test dummy's (is that an oxymoron) shoulder harness fail?

Re: TESTING New ELTs
I knew that there would be some keen observations on this test from our C170 group.
The failure of the seat belt/shoulder harness is a lot more important to me than the non activation of the ELT.
This "action" was covered by several TV networks. NASA has a little money in budget and they are looking for work. Commentator stated that there is one more test and then the results will be handed over to the FAA.
regards

Re: TESTING New ELTs
I'm not sure why you're so critical of NASA doing this test. I think it's good -- they have the facilities, experience, and the manpower. I want to know if ELTs work as intended. Not that I rely on mine ... I guess this is why.

Re: TESTING New ELTs
The copilot's shoulder harness belt itself came apart, the attach point did not fail. The tail of the belt was still attached to the anchor point after impact.
I wonder what they did with the baggage door?

Re: TESTING New ELTs
Any 777 drivers on line? Does a 777 actually have an ELT such as tested in this video?

The 777 does have an ELT but it doesn't look anything like that one.gahorn wrote:Any 777 drivers on line? Does a 777 actually have an ELT such as tested in this video?
