Engine bracket - what's it for

Post by Bruce Fenstermacher »

I'm putting my engine back together. There where six of these brackets attached to the top of the case. Can't remember if they did anything. Can't find them in the IPC. What are they for? Do they belong on a 170A or early B with the internal cooling box? My engine was originally installed in '48 and it might not have been on a 170. Anybody recognize these brackets?

It looks like the engine ground straps. There are four of them, one on each mount attachment.

I don't know why there where six of them seems like a lot to me but they are for holding your Ignition wires. Maybe your breather line had one too.

The brackets are not for a c-170 installation.

They look like "early/older type" ignition lead attach points.

I've placed a post with the subject: Placing a photo or picture in posts, which has instructions how to place photos in posts.

As for the brackets I believe blueldr that they are not for a 170 installation. They could be for holding the plug wires but different styles of these are shown in the IPC. Perhaps as suggested they are older style wire holders. They look more like brackets for holding baffling of some kind in another installation. I may use some of them to hold the plug wires but I don't need 6 (3 on each side) placed every other bolt hole.

Thanks for the posting Bruce. It sure would be nice to be able to archive pics on this site for future reference and not rely on the members internet hosting. I realize it would require additional space on the server (and policeing) but wouldnt it be worth having it on record? Just a thought.

Plans are in the mill for future picture postings. Hopefully not too far down the road.

Yes archiving pictures at this site would be a benefit and I brought up this point. I have it from a good authority that the situation is being looked at. (George and I were typing at the same time).

But like most things it's just not that simple. As far as I know the software itself has no special features to make downloading and linking photos easy.

So the TIC170A would have to get (purchase) more space on the web.

That space would would have to be administered in some way. If the admistrator would like a lot of work he could have all photos come to him for submission then when ready he could provide the link to the person wishing to post the picture to be included in the post. This would be very slow and cumbersome and potentially lots of work for the administrator. I don't recommend it.

Another way would be to allow only TIC170A members post pictures. (remember we don't have to be members here but the association is footing the bill.) Then your login would get you access to the picture space to upload pictures only.

There are problems with this senerio. You would still have to follow all the instructions that I outlined in my separate post. Most people don't know how or have the software to make the photos as small as possible so they don't take much space. My photos at the start of this post are less than 100k a piece but they easily could have been over 10 megs a piece and not looked any different on the screen. We'd quickly run out of space all the photos where the larger size. The administrator could employ a utility such as PhotoShop ($600) to automaticaly reduce the photos. It all takes time and money.

With all the drawbacks I think it still should be done. After all sometimes a picture can be worth a thousand words.

I looked for these brackets in the IPC,the C-145 IPC,and the C-145 OH manual. Didn't find them anywhere. I'd probably leave at least most of them off. I have two similar brackets on my engine, one on each side,I use them to secure the ignition harness.
