Engine covers for Doyn STC

Being in the market for insulated covers, I'm looking for advice on which engine cover to utilize on the B model with a Doyn O-360 conversion. I know the cowling has a pair of blisters to accommodate the wider jugs, but I don't know how far the difference from the stock cowling goes. Can anyone with experience here tell me- will a cover designed for the stock cowling fit this STC cowling? If not, how about for a 172 with the O-360? Lastly, does anyone know of some used, insulated covers for sale, between Colorado & Montana, that I could pick up on my flight to Alaska this fall?

I've never seen the basic cowl size changed for any of the STCs to the point that an engine cowl cover designed for a 170 wouldn't fit. Mods for STCs include the blisters you spoke of and or a different nose bowl and perhaps air intake. None of which I'd think would make a difference with a cowl cover.

Janet Gritter has an entirely new cowling on her airplane, I think. No blisters. I thought by the spinner and the lack of blisters that it was a Doyn conversion, but it is in fact an O-360. I'll see if I can't get some pictures of it the next time I go fly with them.

There is an STC'd all carbon fiber cowl for Lycoming conversions that doesn't have blisters, but I'd be surprised if there's a special cover for it.

It's also possible that narrow deck engines will fit within the original cowl thus no blisters

Janets Cowl Looks to be the same as we installed on the 1956 Cessna 172 tail wheel conversion we did. And we installed a Narrow deck O-360 A1A. It required Blisters. If we had know then what we know now we would have just split and widened the cowl nose bowl. I will bet that is what some one did to Janet's nose cowl. I any case just about any cowl cover for a Cessna 170 or early 172 would likely fit.

The blisters add about one inch of width to each side. I've never tried it, but I'm certain a stock cowl cover will fit. It's not a leotard, it's a Carhartt.

I found a narrow deck engine will not fit a standard cowl without the blisters.Plus I had to reduce the length of the cowl by 1.25 ins as the original cowl was to long . It was hard thing to do but measuring about 8 times and cutting twice worked out. I was too scared to cut to the dimension that I had worked out and left about 3/4 in to play with in case I was wrong. But all worked out in the end.

Hmm, that's something I failed to consider- so the O-360-A1A is a narrow deck, not the wide deck; is that correct?

+1 on Linda at Alaska Wing Covers. She has made all my covers for 30+ years. Ask her about the different types of fabric she uses and colors available, ie, water proof, water resistant, mesh, etc.
