Remote or spin on oil filter for C170B with Lyc 0-360

Post by b17pilot20 »

We have a 1953 C-170B with the 180hp, Lyc 0-360 conversion. We would like to put on an oil filter, but there is no room behind the engine for the factory mount. Has anyone had any experience with either a spin on filter somewhere there is room, or the remote Air Wolf system? Please respond to email: b17pilot20@msn.com.

Thanks,

Why do you not have room for the Lycoming filter adapter? Plenty of room on my '54 Avcon.

This is interesting, as I have heaps of room between the filter and the firewall. Who,s STC is it?

Hi Frank,

I had the same problem with my '53 Avcon conversion. The conversion calls for relocating the battery box to the top center of the firewall. With a stock battery there was no room for a standard Lycoming type straight oil filter adapter. I tried a Casper Labs 90 deg adapter, but that ran into the engine mount. Finally I ended up using the Casper adapter and a 1.5" spacer (sold by Casper). In addition, I had to go to a smaller Odyssey battery and cut down the battery box.

In hindsight with the smaller battery I may have been able to fit the standard Lycoming straight adapter and a filter, but it would have been tight. The Casper 90 deg adapter is a little spendier, but makes oil filter changes a no drip affair so it's not all bad. In addition the Odyssey battery is quite a bit lighter, and takes that weight off the nose on an already nose heavy plane, so double bonus.

I'm betting some will call balderdash and say theirs fit just fine with the stock battery in the same location. Hooray for them. For whatever reason it didn't on mine, and believe me....I tried!

Oh, the battery. My Avcon has the battery on the LH firewall, which leaves room for the oil filter adapter.
