Left and Right Landing Gear Box - what fits?

Post by oakesje »

I'm rebuilding my C170B, put it up for sale and reallized i really didn't want to sell it and am keen to get it flying again. Finished repairing the tail surfaces this spring thanks to my mentor Vic Prefontaine's advice and help. Am now starting on the fuselage. Have the panels behind the baggage compartment de-rivetted, kleco'd in place and while figuring out how to straighten out or replace the bulkhead I'm looking for the left and right landing gear box - mine is crumpled along with the aluminum floor pieces in the gear box area forward. Do you know anyone with a C170 gear box to firewall area for sale? What year of a C180 gear box fits a 1952 C170B? Do C172 gear box fit? Advice from C170B restorers with experience in the gear box to firewall area would be really appreciated. Not sure where to start as there's alot of crumpled pieces in this area...once i get the baggage area repaired the gear box to firewall area is the only parts left to repair!
Thank you,
Jill

Jill, Great to hear you're bringing another 170 up from the grave! I'm far from an expert on landing gear box replacement. Hopefully someone like Del will chime in. But, for what it's worth, here are a couple of thoughts to get the conversation rolling. First, I'd suggest finding a rebuilder with a Cessna fuselage jig to insure that the landing gear box is correctly aligned when it gets installed. Second, consider using Pponk parts in your rebuild of the landing gear box.

No, but as a C-170 association member you would have access to the "Aircraft Salvage and Parts Resources" file in the MX Library.

What year of a C180 gear box fits a 1952 C170B?

1953-1962

Do C172 gear box fit?

No
Ideally you'd find the landing gear support bulkhead assembly, p/n 0513006-151, which is common to the 170b and the 53-62 C-180. Most likely you're going to have find or make the parts to form this assembly. Here are a couple of snapshots from the C-170B IPC with some of my notes and corrections. Here's the C-180 IPC for comparison.
