TX March 14, 2020 Gainsville KGLE
At our last monthly fly-in it was determined that our March fly-in would be to The 2020 Lonestar STOL Competition & Fly-in https://www.facebook.com/events/310040136557196/ . It is scheduled for Saturday the 14th of March at Gainsville http://www.airnav.com/airport/KGLE .
At present we are uncertain if we will eat lunch at the airport or at one of the restaurants close by, but we will eat, visit and enjoy watching some good short field flying. Please let us all try to arrive prior to 11:00 am.
If you have questions/suggestions please contact Ken Peck at 512-468-7790 or c170ken@earthlink.net .

If you haven't looked past the home page for this event check out this page : https://lonestarstol.com/roster/. If you spend any time attending these events or watching the videos there are several names you will recognize including some 170 drivers including C.C. Pocock and some guy who goes by "Jughead".

The show is still a GO today. Over 30 of the original 80 performers made it in.

170s were well represented at the inaugural Lone Star STOL competition although not so many from Texas as weather was not exactly CAVU, not even close. Low ceilings light rain and cool temps made me feel like I was in Alaska. Jeff Pohl from Minnesota took first in the light touring class and Jon Jughead Counsell was second. Jughead was the first person I saw that I knew Friday night and despite my good intentions I never managed to meet Jeff as he was always busy when I saw him. Jughead was the announcer, MC and play by play guy for the competition and he did as good a job as any sportscaster I've ever heard. Being exceptionally knowledgable about your subject makes a world of difference in that job!
Richard Pulley, Karl Towle and his neighbor Eric, Jim Lewis and I went to The Smokehouse during the lunch break Saturday and enjoyed a good meal and good fellowship and it was nice to be warm and dry for a little while.
I suspect this will be the last large aviation event any of us will see for a while as we hunker down during the viral apocalypse. There was a guy there who had come from New Zealand for Sun and Fun which of course has been rescheduled. Amazing how things changed from Friday till Tuesday (today). I encourage you to watch the video of the competition while you wait for the shutdown to end. I've watched a lot of videos of Valdez, Oskosh etc and this is the best produced one I have seen. There is a link on the event homepage in a post above, or you can search Utube with "Lonestar STOL 2020"

I sure wished I could have joined you guys at the Smokehouse. I used to stop in there every so often when traveling to and back from OK. Flew into Gainesville several times just to go over there. Miss that good Texas BBQ.

The weather didn’t cooperate very much but everyone seemed to have a good time.
Jughead made a huge commitment and investment to fly his 170B down from Washington State and he did an outstanding job as competition MC.
